Cooking on Balconies

Outdoor cooking apparatuses are prohibited from use at Newcastle Manor. You may not cook on your balcony or anywhere else outside except using the installed barbecues in the pool area of each building. The risk of fire is too great. Violators are subject to fine and are liable for property damage, injury, or death should a fire occur.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) detection

Smoke detectors are required in all dwelling units. As for carbon monoxide (CO) detection, our condos do not have natural gas hookups and are not directly attached to any parking garages, the most commonly cited factors that determine whether CO detectors are needed. However, since there is natural gas in the buildings (for the boilers in the west buildings, the laundry machines, etc.), each condo does require CO detectors.

Here are the standards the Association has confirmed with a City of Los Angeles Building Inspector regarding requirements for smoke and CO detectors inside condos. Note this is an unofficial write-up for your use at your own risk only. Formal validation of your setup should be performed by a City Inspector.

LOCATION: You must have a working smoke detector just inside the door of each bedroom. If there is a hallway leading to bedrooms, a smoke detector must be there as well. The instructions that come with the smoke detectors will show exactly where to put them (that is, how far from the ceiling/wall, air vents, etc.).

TYPE: If the smoke detector is not hard-wired into your DWP electric service, it must have a 10-year sealed lithium battery. If the smoke detector is hard-wired, it must have a backup battery, which can be either a regular battery (9V, AA, etc.) or a 10-year battery.

CARBON MONOXIDE: The law does not strictly require the same number/location of CO detectors as for smoke detectors, but the easiest and safest way to ensure you're in compliance is to use combination smoke/CO detectors, in the location and of the type described for smoke detectors above.

An easy to install model is the Kidde P4010DCSCO-W, which is a combination smoke/CO detector with a ten-year sealed battery.
